For Ukrainians, Bucha is a tragedy. Nobody has ever heard of or seen so many killings. Photos taken by journalists stunned everyone. They were displayed during Volodymyr Zelenskyy's speech at a UN gathering and in the Romanian parliament. They are disseminated by Ukrainians who demand an end to the conflict.
The images are all frightening. One image, though, gives me the chills since it depicts a regular guy riding a bike. He's gone. Unknown factors may have contributed to the shooting of an unarmed man traveling by bicycle.
There was no need for explanations after a video taken from a height was published by a well-known New York publication. The footage depicts a bike riding down a Bucha street and heading into a parking lot for Russian cars. The Russian armored car fires three high-caliber shells along the roadway as soon as the bicycle rides off on the turn. Two rounds are fired at the rider by the second armored vehicle.
At the very spot where The New York Times shot the footage, a dead cyclist was discovered when the city was freed.
Russians therefore don't require compelling justifications. To live in Ukraine, it is sufficient.
